{"id":3057,"date":"2024-01-08T19:23:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T23:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=3057"},"modified":"2024-01-08T19:23:57","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T23:23:57","slug":"pakistans-court-scraps-a-lifetime-ban-on-politicians-with-convictions-from-contesting-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=3057","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan\u2019s court scraps a lifetime ban on politicians with convictions from contesting elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ISLAMABAD (AP) \u2014 Pakistan\u2019s Supreme Court on Monday scrapped a lifetime ban on politicians with convictions from contesting elections, paving the way for\u00a0former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif\u00a0to run for the fourth time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court ruling will also enable other politicians to run for parliament in the Feb. 8 elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lifetime ban on convicted politicians was imposed in 2018. Under a new court order passed on Monday, convicted politicians would be barred from running only for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharif\u2019s party said he will seek a fourth term after returning in October from a four-year self-exile in London to avoid serving prison sentences on corruption charges. They were overturned on appeal after his return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharif stepped down as prime minister in 2017 over the corruption charges. His main rival, Imran Khan, is currently serving a prison term, but he too has announced plans to run next month.
