MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) \u2014 Florida Gov.\u00a0Ron DeSantis\u00a0suspended his Republican presidential campaign on Sunday, ending his 2024 White House bid just before the New Hampshire primary while endorsing his bitter rival\u00a0Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision leaves Trump and former U.N. Ambassador\u00a0Nikki Haley\u00a0as the last major candidates remaining in the race\u00a0ahead of Tuesday\u2019s New Hampshire primary. This is the scenario Trump\u2019s foes in the GOP have long sought, raising the stakes for this week\u2019s contest as the party\u2019s last chance to stop the former president who has so far dominated the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But as some Trump critics cheered, DeSantis nodded toward Trump\u2019s primary dominance \u2014 and attacked Haley \u2014 in an exit video he posted on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,\u201d DeSantis said in the straight-to-camera video, delivered in a cheerful tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He continued: \u201cI signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee and I will honor that pledge. He has my endorsement because we can\u2019t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haley spoke at a campaigning stop in Seabrook, New Hampshire, just as DeSantis announced his decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe ran a great race, he\u2019s been a good governor, and we wish him well,\u201d she told a room packed with supporters and media. \u201cHaving said that, it\u2019s now one fella and one lady left.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DeSantis\u2019 decision, while perhaps not surprising\u00a0given his 30-point blowout loss last week in Iowa, marks the end of an extraordinary decline for a\u00a0high-profile governor once thought to be a legitimate threat\u00a0to Trump\u2019s supremacy in the Republican Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
