{"id":3443,"date":"2024-08-06T10:54:57","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T14:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=3443"},"modified":"2024-08-06T10:54:59","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T14:54:59","slug":"as-instagram-remains-blocked-in-turkey-erdogan-accuses-social-media-companies-of-digital-fascism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=3443","title":{"rendered":"As Instagram remains blocked in Turkey, Erdogan accuses social media companies of \u2018digital fascism\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ANKARA, Turkey (AP) \u2014 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused social media platforms of \u201cdigital fascism\u201d on Monday for allegedly censoring photographs of Palestinian \u201cmartyrs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Turkish leader\u2019s comments came as Turkish officials were engaged in discussions with representatives of the social media platform, Instagram, to reinstate access to millions of its users in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Information and Communication Technologies Authority\u00a0barred access to Instagram\u00a0on Aug.2 without providing a reason. Government officials said the ban was imposed because Instagram failed to abide by Turkish regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several media reports said however, that the action was in response to Instagram removing posts by Turkish users that expressed condolences over the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. It was the latest instance of a clampdown on websites in the country which has a track record of censoring social media and other online platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey cannot even tolerate photographs of Palestinian martyrs and immediately ban them,\u201d Erdogan said at a human rights event. \u201cWe are confronted with a digital fascism that is disguised as freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike its Western allies,\u00a0Turkey does not consider Hamas a terror organization. A strong critic of Israel\u2019s military actions in Gaza, Erdogan has described the group as a liberation movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdogan went on to state that social media websites were allegedly allowing all kinds of propaganda by groups considered terrorists in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have tried to establish a line of dialogue through our relevant institutions.
