{"id":450,"date":"2021-05-03T16:52:26","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T16:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=450"},"modified":"2021-05-03T16:52:31","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T16:52:31","slug":"iran-a-key-topic-as-us-envoy-blinken-meets-uk-counterpart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=450","title":{"rendered":"Iran a key topic as US envoy Blinken meets UK counterpart"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Iran is expected to be a key topic in talks Monday between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his host in London, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two envoys donned face masks and fist-pumped before heading into the talks, a day ahead of the Group of Seven leading industrial nations\u2019 first face-to-face discussions in two years, involving foreign and development ministers. The U.K. holds this year\u2019s G-7 presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blinken\u2019s visit to London, his first since being appointed by President Joe Biden, comes amid mounting speculation of a prisoner exchange deal with Iran. Prisoner exchanges are not uncommon and were a feature of the 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and the world\u2019s leading powers. Biden has indicated he is looking to restart nuclear talks with Tehran after his predecessor, Donald Trump, pulled the U.S. out of the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Britain, there\u2019s particular interest in the well-being of a British-Iranian woman, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was last week sentenced in Iran to an additional year in prison on charges of spreading \u201cpropaganda against the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his government is doing what it can amid reports in Iran that Britain would pay a 400 million-pound ($550 million) debt to secure Zaghari-Ratcliffe\u2019s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe, of course, make sure that we do everything we can to look after the interests of Nazanin and all the very difficult dual national cases we have in Tehran,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier Monday, Blinken held bilateral talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on an array of subjects including the coronavirus pandemic and the climate crisis, as well as raising concerns over North Korea\u2019s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, the full G-7 \u2014 Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. \u2014 will meet along with representatives from other countries, including Australia, India and South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the gathering, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned that \u201cauthoritarian states\u201d around the world are \u201ctrying to play us against each other\u201d and that breaches of international law have become commonplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important that we hold our values of democracy, state of law, human rights and a global order based on rules against them, united and credibly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the meeting, Britain\u2019s Foreign Office said the G-7 ministers will invest $15 billion in development finance over the next two years to help women in developing countries access jobs, build resilient businesses and recover from the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also expected to sign up to new targets to get 40 million more girls into school and 20 million more girls reading by the age of 10 in poorer nations by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>___<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirsten Grieshaber in Berlin contributed to this report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Iran is expected to be a key topic in tal [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":451,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-450","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/450","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=450"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/450\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":452,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/450\/revisions\/452"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/451"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=450"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=450"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=450"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
