{"id":720,"date":"2021-08-09T13:16:21","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T17:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=720"},"modified":"2021-08-09T13:16:27","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T17:16:27","slug":"alibaba-fires-manager-over-suspected-sexual-assault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.viewworld.org\/?p=720","title":{"rendered":"Alibaba fires manager over suspected sexual assault"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>HONG KONG (AP) \u2014 China\u2019s largest e-commerce company, Alibaba, said Monday it fired a manager accused of sexual assault and pledged to strengthen its anti-sexual harassment policy, after a female employee accused the company of suppressing her report of the assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unidentified female employee went public Saturday with an internal post detailing the alleged sexual assault by her manager and a client during a business trip, according to local media reports. She said she was forced to drink alcohol, that her manager sexually assaulted her in a hotel room while she was intoxicated and that she was also molested by the client while her manager turned a blind eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The employee said the company didn\u2019t take the matter seriously when she reported the assault, and that she was told the suspect would not be fired from the company, according to her post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a memo by Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang made public Monday, he said the accused perpetrator \u2014 who works at its Neighborhood Retail business unit \u2014 confessed to \u201cintimate acts\u201d with the female employee while she was intoxicated. Zhang said the manager was fired because he was in serious violation of company policy. The manager was not identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether he has committed rape or indecency that violates the law will be determined by law enforcement,\u201d Zhang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two other executives, namely the president of the Neighborhood Retail business unit and the head of the unit\u2019s human resources department, resigned to take responsibility for mishandling the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the employee reported a horrendous act such as rape, they did not make timely decisions nor took appropriate action,\u201d said Zhang. \u201cAs such, they need to bear responsibility as leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba\u2019s Chief People Officer Judy Tong was also given a demerit on her record, as the human resources department \u201cdid not pay enough attention and care to our people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the memo, Zhang pledged to expedite the formation of an anti-sexual harassment policy that has \u201czero tolerance for sexual misconduct.\u201d He also said there will be trainings held for the company on the protection of employee rights and interests, and that a dedicated reporting channel will be established that will allow employees to file a report if they feel violated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said Sunday that it was working with the police to investigate the incident.
